Yaser El-Waly on Recognising the Good in Everyday Life

More Than Just Thanking

It is common practice for a person to express gratitude in relation to what they already have at their disposal. For Yaser El-Waly, being grateful involves a deeper meaning, which includes the identification of opportunities that are embedded in everything else.

The Islamic teachings about values have formed his approach to blessings. An educational experience, good relations with someone, a random opportunity, or a hard experience that promotes self-development are just some of the examples of what people should be able to appreciate. It is not necessary to have something amazing in order to become grateful; it is enough to realize the value of mundane things.

Learning to Notice What Is Already There

Most people have the tendency of concentrating on what they don't have. For instance, one tends to contemplate about his/her next achievement, future possession or new phase of life without considering all the things which he or she already owns.

However, Yaser El-Waly has a unique way of looking at how one can be thankful for what he or she has received. As mentioned by Yaser, gratitude is the beginning of recognizing all those parts of life which remain unnoticed because of their regular occurrence: spending time with family members, acquiring education, having good friends, remaining healthy, engaging in exciting activities and getting a chance to serve others. Life in the modern era is hectic, and no one has time to thank for what one has even if one lives in various cities like Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.

Difficult Experiences Can Teach Too

In the same manner, Yaser El-Waly thinks gratitude should not be restricted to moments of ease. There are experiences that become beneficial after one knows what was gained from them. Failure teaches better preparation; disagreements, the value of communication; uncertainty, new priorities.

It is not to look at hard times as good times, but rather what can be gained from such moments without allowing the difficulties to make one forget about the good parts of life.

Gratitude Changes How We Treat Others

Yaser El-Waly also thinks that gratitude has a social element for him. When a person realizes what kind of help he has received, he will realize how important the contributions of other people are. Gratitude shown to a relative, acknowledgement of colleagues’ efforts, appreciation of a teacher, or recognition of volunteers’ efforts can have positive effects on interpersonal relations.

Gratitude must be manifested through one’s actions, according to Yaser. It is much stronger when it affects the way a person speaks, gives, cooperates, and treats people.

Making Appreciation a Habit

For Yaser El-Waly , gratitude takes on more significance when it is practiced all the time and not kept for special occasions. An individual can spend some time at the end of the day reflecting on the successes, lessons, and the good people who make a difference in their life.

This practice, when applied consistently, can help to change one’s outlook on life. Apart from always comparing their lives based on what needs to be done, they will also realize that a lot has been given to them.

To Yaser El-Waly, gratitude serves to help people pay more attention to their lives. This allows them to see opportunities, cherish the relationships in their lives, gain from their experiences, and act with more responsibility towards the blessings they have received. In a world where people keep looking out for something else, appreciating what is right there can be an act of faith in itself.
